Welcome to Sala
This page in english includes comprehensive information about the municipality of Sala and some tips for a stay with us. See you in Sala!
Both town and countryside
Sala originated as a silver mining community, and is now an attractive small town with 70 shops and a market. The surrounding countryside is characterised by farmland and historic mining activities. Organic farms, country grocery shops and small farm shops provide a lively and dynamic rural environment.
Sala - the silver town
Silver mining began here in the 16th century, and a mining village soon grew up beside the thriving Sala Silver Mine. The miners built dams to power the mine. These dams with their white bridges remain a picturesque feature of the town today. In the 17th century, the mining village moved to its current location on the plain to make room for further expansion. Sala suffered a devastating fire in 1736, followed by a second fire in the western quarter in 1880.
Sala’s main mining activities were terminated in 1908, and the last mine closed in 1962. Guided tours of Sala Silver Mine began in the same year. Today, the mine is a popular visitor attraction and one of Sweden’s finest treasure troves – both in terms of culture and adventure.
